Grammy Nominations Announced – Jonas Brothers, Colbert, Conchords got Nods

The 2008 Grammy nominations were announced today, and TV fans will recognize some familiar names among the nominees. The 51st Grammy Awards will take place on Sunday,  February 9, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will air on CBS.

This year, the Grammys seem to be embracing more modern music, with hip hop artist Lil’ Wayne leading the pack with eight nominations. For TV enthusiasts, The Jonas Brothers, known for Camp Rock, are nominated for Best New Artist. Stephen Colbert received a nod for Best Spoken Word Album for The Colbert Report, and Flight of the Conchords is up for Best Comedy Album with their debut album.

The Jonas Brothers have some tough competition in the Best New Artist category, facing off against Duffy, Adele, Lady Antebellum, and Jazmine Sullivan. Stephen Colbert will also have a challenging matchup for Best Spoken Word Album, competing against big names like Steve Martin, Sidney Poitier, and David Sedaris. Flight of the Conchords are in a similar situation, up against comedy legends like Lewis Black, Harry Shearer, and the late George Carlin.

Thought teens and tweens everywhere will be rooting for The Jonas Brothers, my hunch is that Welsh newcomer Duffy is the favorite in the Best New Artist category.  Colbert, however, has an excellent chance of winning, though Steve Martin is a formidable opponent.  Flight of the Conchords likely has no chance, as all awards shows like to posthumously honor greatness, this case in the form of George Carlin, who probably deserves the award anyway for his final comedy special “It’s Bad for Ya.”

Other notable nominees include Coldplay, who garnered seven nominations, plus Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Ne-Yo, each of whom were nominated six times.
